Trinity Sunday

Romans 8:12-17

This week for our Bible study we will be thinking about ‘The Trinity’. 

As Christians we believe in a God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and it is quite difficult to understand how one God can be three persons.

If you are able, please look up Rublev’s famous painting showing the three Angels being hosted by Abraham at Mambré. That is the official title, but it has long been thought that the angels actually represent the three persons of the Trinity – all submitting to each other.

The word ‘Trinity’ is not used in the Biblical text – the idea of one God in three persons developed slowly after the ascension of Jesus. In fact, the whole concept is a bit mysterious and difficult to understand.  It demonstrates just how difficult it is for the human mind to fully understand God.  However, there are some particular passages in the Bible that reveal the Trinity.  The one we are using this time is Romans 8:12-17.

This passage, which mentions all 3 persons of the Godhead, looks specifically at how the believer relates to God.

Q.3 Which person of the Godhead is responsible for ‘leading’ believers? (v.15)

Q.4 What relationship does the Holy Spirit lead the believer into? (V.15).

Q 5 Do you see yourself as a son or daughter of God? When did you begin to see yourself like this?

Q.6 How do we become sons/daughters of God?

Q.7 If we are ‘fellow heirs’ with Christ, what do you think that means? (v17)

Q.8 What do you think it means to share in Christ’s sufferings? (v.18)

Having looked at this passage, if you have time, what does it tell you about how God in three persons works for the individual believer?

There are lots of other passages in the New Testament that point to the Trinity. Ephesians 1:1-14 gives a good overall view of how God works as a Trinity.
