Caring for Creation

Some practical suggestions for how we can help to care for God’s creation

Caring for God’s creation is an integral component of being a disciple of Jesus.

Christians ought to be concerned with social justice in the whole of God’s world and the environment is an inseparable part of social justice.

As Christians we need to “Act Locally, Think Globally”. We see the impact of taking God’s creation for granted both locally, in the amount of waste we generate, and globally in the impact that climate change has on the poorest people in the world.

To help us as a Church to embed caring for God’s creation in our daily life, as a church and as individuals, the Clergy are supported by a Caring for Creation group that reports to the PCC.

As a church we have signed up to Eco Church. This is A Rocha UK’s award scheme for churches in England and Wales who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth. A Rocha UK is a Christian charity working for the protection and restoration of the natural world. The scheme encourages churches to focus on four areas of church life:

  • worship and teaching

  • care of our buildings and land

  • community and global engagement

  • personal lifestyle.

The Church of England has committed to becoming net zero for carbon emissions by 2030. As a church in Ashtead we’re looking at how we should respond to this . We’re also keen to explore other ways in which we can care for the environment we live in; as a church, as individuals and by encouraging our leaders and politicians to make changes to policies so that caring for creation is made more of a priority.
