Besom - People helping out in Ashtead

Poverty, injustice, isolation… many of us want to do something, but we don’t always know how…

Helping out at BesomBesom helps people make a difference by providing a bridge between those who want to give time, money, skills or things and those who are in need, and is part of a network of local schemes operating all around the country. The aim is to help local church members get out into the community around us, whether you are 8 or over 80, to make a real difference to people’s lives.

The recipients are families that are struggling because of financial problems, family breakdown, or simply because life has got on top of them. And, they have needs that cannot be met by social services – for example, a room that needs decorating, a house that needs de-cluttering, or an item of furniture that would make their life a little bit easier. Our hope and prayer is that everyone would want to get involved in some way in order to make a real difference in our community.

Decorating a kitchenA match made in heaven…

One of our givers offered a two-seater sofa and washed the covers, so that it came out looking like new. Initially, we had no one to offer it to, but after prayer, our team were contacted by the All Saints project in Leatherhead about a young mum who had been the victim of domestic violence. As well as taking her some clothing, she was also looking for a sofa… and it just so happened the one we had was a perfect match for her curtains!

Restoring a GardenAnother of our givers put up a side-fence and gate for a young family in Ashtead, so that the children could play in the garden without wandering on to the road. The project was paid for by one of our housegroups. Another team went back
recently to make the rest of the garden more child-friendly. “I like this garden!”, exclaimed one of the children when he saw the transformation.

We’d love to hear from you if you would like to be involved in any way:
• Giving good quality things like furniture or bedding;
• Decorating, gardening or tidying as a group or individual;
• Offering special skills, like DIY or curtain-making;
• We also welcome financial donations - small or large.
• Prayer support and lots of other ways we haven’t thought of yet...
